As our school continues to grow and flourish we are introducing new roles. This is an exciting opportunity to join us as a Bushcraft & Outdoor Learning Practitioner.
Chilton Bridge School is an independent specialist school set within a beautiful location near Yeovil, Somerset. We adopt a creative, individualised approach for students who have barriers to learning associated with social, emotional, mental health and ASC needs. Our curriculum approach, Enterprise Learning, allows our students to rebuild confidence in their abilities, feel safe and supported, and gain skills and knowledge that will allow them to thrive in the modern world.
The Bushcraft and Outdoor Learning Practitioner will lead and deliver high-quality, inclusive outdoor learning experiences, with a focus on building students’ confidence, practical skills, and connection to the natural environment. This role supports the school’s wider curriculum intent, therapeutic offer, and commitment to experiential learning.
The successful applicant will be required to design and deliver engaging bushcraft and outdoor learning sessions linked to curriculum themes, personal development, and enterprise learning. They will also be required to plan for progression in practical skills (e.g., fire lighting, shelter building, knot tying, tool use, foraging) in a way that is inclusive and adaptable. and adapt sessions to meet the individual needs of all students.
Other responsibilities will include: Maintaining and manage outdoor learning spaces, tools and resources ,conducting and reviewing risk assessments for all outdoor and off-site activities and ensure all activities are compliant with health and safety and safeguarding procedures. They will also support the development of on-site and off-site outdoor provision, including working with colleagues and external providers to identify appropriate spaces and required adaptations and supporting staff in understanding and facilitating outdoor learning and bushcraft principles within their roles.
The person in this role will also contribute to wider whole-school events, such as off-site expeditions, forest school days, or themed project weeks. They will work with community partners, visiting practitioners or organisations to enhance the outdoor learning offer. As well as support preparation for relevant awards or pathways (e.g., Duke of Edinburgh, John Muir Award etc).
You must be able to build effective and supportive relationships with our students, which encourage their engagement and development of self confidence and enjoyment.
Applicants for Practitioner posts must hold relevant qualifications in their area of expertise (equivalent to level 3 – 5). Being a qualified teacher is not a requirement, however experience of teaching or working within a relevant setting would be an advantage.
We are open to considering applications from candidates with a range of skills or specialisms.
Candidates must have experience within their industry and have a desire to teach. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate vocational experience as well as having excellent administrative and organisational abilities in order to perform the role successfully.
Candidates will be supported with a role specific induction and there are excellent opportunities for personal development, including support to gain a recognised teaching qualification.
